Chisinau, 17 March /MOLDPRES/ - The leadership of the Border Police says that it has coped with the extraordinary situation which emerged at the border in the last weeks.

At a news briefing today, Head of the Border Police Rosian Vasiloi said that ‘’in the first week after the unleashing of the military conflict in the neighbor country, the flow of people at the state border with Ukraine increased almost seven-fold and at the border with Romania it grew three-fold.’’

„As many as 247,000 out of the total number of 351,000 foreign citizens who entered from Ukraine crossed Moldova’s territory to Romania and about 104,000 are presently in Moldova. Such a situation has never existed in the contemporary history of the Moldovan state; we managed to cope with the first extraordinary situation emerged at the eastern border,’’ Vasiloi said.

The Moldovan official noted that, for a quick management of a possible new wave of refugees from Moldova, ‘’it is necessary to adjust the current normative framework, through derogations from the list of travel documents needed to cross the state border and to simplify the procedures of recruiting and selection of staff for employment at the Border Police on the purpose of supplying the vacant positions.’’

At the same time, Rosian Vasiloi specified that 185 cases of illegal crossing of the state border have been recorded. As many as 657 Ukrainian men, with ages between 18 and 60 years, were detained after the illegal crossing of the border, as a result of the restrictive measures imposed by Ukraine. ‘’As many as 397 of the people detained demanded asylum in Moldova. At the same time, 86 people were subjected to the readmission mechanism, being transmitted to the Ukrainian authorities,’’ Vasiloi said.

At present, all points of crossing the border with Ukraine and Romania are functional.
