Chisinau, March 22 / MOLDPRES /- Moldova today marks World Water Day. This year the celebration is held with the slogan Groundwater: Let's make the invisible visible!

Elena Bodnarenco, head of the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment and Regional Development, urged elected officials to work together to manage water resources in a sustainable way.

Groundwater supplies almost half of all drinking water worldwide, about 40% of water for irrigation and about 1/3 of the water needed by industry. Groundwater also supports ecosystems, maintains the basic flow of rivers, and prevents land subsidence and seawater from entering.

In the Republic of Moldova, water supply is a pressing issue, because water sources are unevenly distributed and its quality, in many cases, does not correspond to existing national standards. Groundwater is the main source of drinking water for 100% of the rural population and 30% of the urban population or 65% of the total population of the country. The rest, 35% of the total population, use surface water as a source of drinking water.

World Water Day was established at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro on December 22, 1992. In our country, this day has been celebrated since 1993.
