Japan to identify new measures to support agro-industrial sector in Moldova

Chisinau, April 19 / MOLDPRES /- Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is currently in the process of identifying the needs of the agro-industrial sector of the Republic of Moldova in order to come up with investment proposals in this regard.

The statement was made by Matsunaga Hideki, Director General of Middle East and European Department of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), who recently had a meeting with the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAIA). The topics discussed were the effects of the war in Ukraine on the agricultural sector and food security in our country, as well as the problems of immediate development, in the medium and long term, which were identified in the sector.

"The crises facing the agricultural sector, including the war in Ukraine, the large influx of refugees, the difficulties in marketing production on traditional foreign markets have left their mark, therefore, the sector needs support," said Minister Viorel Gherciu.

There was also talk of the fertilizer crisis, the freeze on goods in Ukraine, as well as the current stages of implementation of JICA-funded projects.

The 2KR Non-Privileged Farmers Assistance Project, launched in 2000, has significantly contributed to providing Moldovan agriculture with high-performance agricultural equipment, modern equipment and machinery.

In 2017, the Government of Japan provided the Republic of Moldova with non-reimbursable financial resources amounting to 500 million Japanese yen, the equivalent of 81 million lei, in order to purchase agricultural machinery that ensured the development of a sustainable soil management system in our country. Another project implemented is the efficient use of solid biomass fuel.
