Over 2.4 million Moldovans traveled to EU since abolition of visa regime

Chisinau, April 28 / MOLDPRES /- In the eight years since the abolition of the visa regime for short-term travel of Moldovan citizens, more than 2.4 million Moldovans have traveled without visas to European Union countries.

According to the Border Police, in the last eight years, 2,435,082 Moldovan citizens showed up at the exit through the country through the crossing points located on the border with Romania, but also through the Chisinau International Airport, having as destination the community space.

According to statistics, young people aged between 26 and 35 were among the top people who chose to travel to the European Union on the basis of a biometric passport - 592,659. With a small difference are Moldovans aged 46+ (546,022), followed in the top by people aged between 36 and 45 (451,108).

The most requested crossing point was Leuseni - Albita, the border police registering 873,289 people, followed by Chisinau International Airport through which 449,317 holders of biometric passports left the country, and another 424,211 Moldovans went to the European community through the border point. The decision on the abolition of visas for citizens of the Republic of Moldova was published in the Official Journal of the EU on April 8, 2014 and entered into force on April 28, 2014. The liberalization of visas for citizens of the Republic of Moldova is provided by EU Regulation No539/2001 on the list of third countries whose nationals must be in possession of visas for the crossing of external borders and the list of third countries whose nationals are exempt from this obligation.
