Chisinau, 29 April /MOLDPRES/ - The members of the People’s Assembly (local parliament) of the Autonomous Territorial Unit Gagauz-Yeri (APG) today approved a local law on the symbols of Victory in the autonomy. The law allows the manufacturing of the so-called ribbon of Saint George in the region.

The regional law was adopted in simplified regime. According to the APG lawmakers, this fact is allowed by the regulation on the special status of UTA Gagauzia.

The symbols promoting the military aggression (the letters V and Z, as well as the so-called St. George ribbon) are banned on the territory of Moldova, after President Maia Sandu last week promulgated the law to this effect, earlier adopted by the parliament.

According to the document passed by the parliament, the manufacturing, sale and holding of the symbols of military aggression is punished with a fine worth from 4,500 to 9,000 lei or non-remunerated labour for the benefit of the community from 30 to 60 hours. Legal entities run the risk of being fined with up to 18,000 lei.

More jurists set forth their opinions on the decision by the Gagauz lawmakers. They noted that the ruling had, to a great extent, a political character or the autonomy’s laws are not above the Constitution and laws of Moldova. The jurists also said that the law from Comrat would not have equal value for policemen.
