Chisinau, 5 May /MOLDPRES/ - The current situation in the terms of Moldova’s supply with natural gas, as well as the challenges in the energy sector today were discussed by Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita and the leadership of the Secretariat of the Energy Community (SCE). On 1 April 2022, SCE opened an office in Chisinau, in order to help Moldova modernize the energy sector and implement the reforms regarding the European legislation, for the benefit of the Moldovan citizens, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.

The prime minister said that SCE’s involvement and the support provided by the government would help Moldova overcome the energy crisis, recently enhanced by the war in Ukraine and the prices’ increase, and would contribute to ensuring the energy security.

„The strengthening of the capacities for overcoming the challenges in the energy sector is essential in ensuring our economic, social and political stability. We want the results of the cooperation with SCE to be covered in Moldova’s legislation and together to create a safer and more resistant energy sector to the present and future challenges, both in terms of supply with natural gas and with electricity. On a short term, yet, we should find together solutions to ensure reasonable prices for energy,’’ Natalia Gavrilita said.

The PM referred to the actions already undertaken by the cabinet to enhance the security of supply with gas and ensure the citizens’ uninterrupted access to electric energy. She noted that investments in renewable sources remained priority.

For his part, SCE Director Artur Lorkowski gave assurances that Moldova would be backed, in continuation, in the implementation of the European acquis in the energy sector, creation of transparent energy markets and balancing the system of electric energy in the region.

The Energy Community is an international organization which brings together more EU member states, Moldova, Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Georgia, Montenegro, Serbia and Ukraine. Moldova has been member of the Energy Community since 2010.
