Chisinau, May 10 / MOLDPRES /- Speaker Igor Grosu met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on a visit to our country on the evening of 9 May, the parliament's communication and public relations department has reported.

Attending the event were deputy speaker Mihail Popșoi, the head of the Committee on Foreign Policy and European Integration, Doina Gherman, the head of the Committee on Social Protection, Health and Family, Dan Perciun.

Igor Grosu welcomed and highly appreciated His Excellency's visit to Chisinau, this being the first visit of the UN Secretary General to our country and even more important that it takes place in very complicated times for Moldova, for the neighboring country and for the entire Europe.

"Our country's position on the war in Ukraine is clear, decisive and leaves no room for interpretation. The Republic of Moldova strongly condemns the unjust war against Ukraine. In this context, my visit to Ukraine also took place, during which I saw the consequences of the atrocities against civilians in the cities of Bucea and Irpin. At the same time, we saw women and men determined, convinced of their cause ", Igor Grosu told António Guterres.

The speaker noted the effort and dedication with which Moldovans host and help refugees, despite the fact that Moldova is facing a succession of crises.

"We stand by the Ukrainian people and do everything we can to ease the burden of the war. The authorities, our families, with the support of international partners will continue to provide all necessary assistance to the people of Ukraine, including by facilitating the transit of humanitarian aid, goods and merchandise for the people of the neighboring country, "said Igor Grosu.

He thanked the UN for earmarking the necessary financial resources to help refugees and stressed the importance of speeding up their recovery process.

In his turn, the senior UN official mentioned that his visit to the Republic of Moldova is a visit of gratitude and solidarity with our country.

António Guterres argued that the Republic of Moldova, a non-EU state and the smallest of all Ukrainian refugees, was the country with the highest number of refugees per capita. "It is an expression of the extraordinary generosity that Moldova and its people have shown," said António Guterres.

In this context, it was stressed that the international community must come up with a stronger message of support for the Republic of Moldova.

The sides also noted Moldova's constructive and effective work on the United Nations platform.

In the context of the 30th anniversary of the accession to the UN, which Moldova marks this year, the officials opted for enhanced bilateral cooperation.

At the end, the UN Secretary General signed the Guest Book of Honor and visited the Plenary Session of the Parliament.
