Chisinau, 12 May /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita today had a meeting with EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson. The discussions were focused on mainly on the security risks in the context of the regional developments and the mechanisms applied in Moldova for the management of the multiple consequences of the war in Ukraine, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.

The PM said the Moldovan authorities remained focused on the attenuation of the humanitarian and economic consequences triggered by the war, as well as on ensuring of a decent living of the people who came from Ukraine in Moldova. At the same time, according to the prime minister, one of the key goals remains the maintaining of stability in Moldova and at its borders, including with EU’s support.

„The European Union gave us a string of useful mechanisms for ensuring the security and public order in Moldova. Over 70 European policemen of the Frontex mission work at the border crossing points along with their colleagues from Moldova. We are also backed by the mission of the EU Border Assistance Mission for Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) in strengthening the security at border and we will work together in continuation, in order to quickly respond to the current challenges,’’ Natalia Gavrilita said.

The officials also discussed the impact of the war on Moldova’s trade. The closing of the Odessa port and the need to re-orient the commercial routes hit the value chains, which led to the increase in prices. In the context, the PM asked for assistance on behalf of the European Union in the processes of easing the traffic at border and liberalization of the international transport of goods, as well as for Moldova’s inclusion in the European procurement mechanisms.

For her part, Ylva Johansson thanked the Moldovan authorities for the way they had helped the refugees from Ukraine and appreciated the solidarity proved by Moldova’s citizens. ‘’We will continue to support the humanitarian actions of Moldova and to back you with funds and other resources.

We are also willing to provide assistance necessary in the cyber security sector,’’ the EU Commissioner said.

In discussions, the officials referred also to the importance of the Moldova-EU cooperation in the home affairs field and stressed the need to consolidate the competent ministry’s capacities in the sector of state borders’ management.
