Moldovan foreign affairs minister meets Japanese counterpart

Chisinau, 14 May /MOLDPRES/ - Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Nicu Popescu has had a meeting with Foreign Affairs Minister of Japan Hayashi Yoshimasa, on the sidelines of the G7 ministerial meeting. The Japanese minister has earlier held the position of head of the Japan-Moldova parliamentary friendship group in the National Diet (parliament) of Japan, Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) press service has reported.       

The discussions of the two diplomats were focused on the latest developments in the region, the consequences of the war in Ukraine, as well as their impact on Moldova, through the light of the large number of refugees received by Moldova. The two diplomacy heads firmly condemned Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine and reiterated the efforts to back the latter.  

„I thanked Japan and the partner countries for the assistance provided, in order to manage the refugees’ crisis. The Tokyo authorities supported us with a contribution of 12 million dollars, offered within the Moldova Support Platform, as well as a voluntary donation worth 1.7 million dollars on behalf of Japanese companies, NGOs and citizens on the account opened by the Finance Ministry,’’ Minister Nicu Popescu said.  

At the same time, the officials exchanged opinions on the stage of the bilateral relations, as well as opportunities of deepening them. The sides also appreciated the constant assistance on behalf of Japan within various projects carried out in Moldova, materialized in initiatives regarding the country’s modernization and its European integration.
