Day center for people with autism to be set up in Moldovan capital

Chisinau, May 26 / MOLDPRES /- A day center for teenagers and adults with autism will be set up in the capital. An agreement in this regard was signed today by the head of the General Directorate of Medical and Social Assistance (DGAMS) of Chisinau, Boris Gîlca, and the executive director of the public association SOS Autism, Aliona Dumitraș.

During the event, Boris Gîlca said that by signing the agreement, a green light was given for the creation of an essential and unique service in Chisinau. "This initiative aims to develop a continuous partnership between the capital's city hall and civil society organizations. We want to create a tolerant majority environment and, through specialists, to help people with autism in the process of social inclusion ", said Boris Gîlca.

Aliona Dumitraș said that the new center will have a minimum capacity of 25 people and will be equipped with furniture, equipment and infrastructure adapted to people with autism. "The staff that will work within the center will be prepared, in order to implement the best practices in the process of training people with autism", she said.

The center will be created from the resources of the European Union and the Soros Foundation Moldova, in partnership with the Chisinau city hall. The total amount allocated for the implementation of the project is 57 thousand euros.

According to official statistics, the number of children diagnosed with autism is increasing every year, from 144 children in 2012 to 663 in 2019.
