Chisinau, 31 May /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova’s National Library (BNRM), in partnership with the Bogdan Petriceicu-Hasdeu Romanian Philology Institute, today launched three volumes titled, Alexandru Cosmescu-centenar (Alexandru Cosmescu-centenary). The books appeared at a publishing house from Iasi, Romania, in the collection, Bessarabia in the Romanian Culture, and prepared for printing by university professor, writer Catalin Bordeianu.

In the beginning of the event, Culture Minister Sergiu Prodan said the works by Alexandru Cosmescu had not been raised at the level they were worth of in the Romanian literature. ‘’He translated from works of high value authors of the universal and Russian literature: Andersen, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, etc. Through these translations, we had access not only to the universal literature, but also to a model of Romanian language in the Moldovan Soviet Republic,’’ the official noted. In the context, academician Mihai Cimpoi said that Alexandru Cosmescu had been a great scholar in an unfriendly period of Moldova’s literature and a guide of more young writers.

Prose, essay writer, playwright, translator, editor of newspapers, journalist Alexandru Cosmescu was born in the Vorniceni commune, Lapusna county (presently Straseni district), on 24 May 1922. In 1951, Cosmescu editorially debuted with a story titled, Dealul viei (The Vineyard Hill). He was awarded the order, The Badge of Honour (1960) and the honorific title, Merited Master in Arts (1989). Alexandru Cosmescu died in Chisinau on 29 September 1989.
