Spain's government to support Moldova in managing refugees' crisis

Chisinau, 3 June /MOLDPRES/ - The Kingdom of Spain has provided Moldova with about 30 tons of assistance and 20 million euros for the management of the crisis of refugees from Ukraine; if necessary, 2,000 people who fled the war of Ukraine will be able to be hosted by Spain. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez made statements to this effect at a news conference held jointly with President Maia Sandu today.
„The government of Spain is determined to back Moldova, both at the bilateral level and within the European Union. Or, we will open a diplomatic office in Chisinau for the strengthening and development of our relations,’’ Pedro Sanchez said.
For her part, the head of state appreciated the dynamic of the development of the Moldovan-Spanish relations, which turn 30 years of their establishment in 2022. ‘’No country can develop in isolation and during these three decades we have enjoyed strong support on behalf of Spain and our relations witness a nice development, which we want to consolidate,’’ Maia Sandu said.
„Spain is an important commercial partner for Moldova, as well as a significant source of investments. Presently, 58 companies with Spanish foreign capital, well-known brands in the energy, vine-growing and wine-making sectors, automobile, etc. work in Moldova. We are interested in attracting Spanish investments in the textile industry and modernization of the agro-food sector. We would like to establish a partnership also with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation,’’ the head of state stressed.
Also, both officials condemned the war in Ukraine, launched by Russia and spoke out for peace in the region and in the world.
President Maia Sandu today met Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sanchez in Chisinau today. This is the first visit to Moldova paid by a Spanish official of such a level.
