Chisinau, 8 June /MOLDPRES/ - Creation of sustainable solutions for recycling of broken glass pieces is the title of a project launched in Chisinau on 7 June. The project is financed by the National Environment Fund, co-financed and implemented by the recycling public association.

”About 16 per cent of the waste produced by the Moldovan capital’s residents are recyclable: glass, paper, cardboard, metal, plastic, tyres, textiles. They can be processed, in order to be component parts of products or even transformed into new products with market economic value. The project, Creation of sustainable solutions for recycling of broken glass pieces, is a huge achievement for each of us. The success in the recycling of glass requires a continuous innovation and to back the continuously changing needs of our consumers, we should keep pace with them as well,’’ Environment Minister Iuliana Cantaragiu said at the launch event.

According to the director of the recycling factory, ABS Recycling, Serghei Balica, the Chisinau city annually produces 188,000 tons of waste, i.e. 515 tons of waste per day. ‘’On average, one Chisinau resident has over 300 kg of waste per year. Theoretically, the quantity of waste made by the capital’s residents is smaller than the one of a single resident of the European Union; yet, much waste is recycled in EU, while in Moldova, most waste reaches waste deposits. Everybody generates waste daily; for this reason, a management of the waste which all of us produce is necessary. The waste is not only an environmental problem, but also an economic loss, ‘’Balica said.

A museum of lost things was constructed from the ground on the area of the plant for sorting solid household waste of the ABS Recycling Company. The museum hosts as exhibits dozens of medals, icons, souvenirs from various countries and decoration objects from the times of the Soviet Union. All exhibits were found during the sorting of the waste collected in Chisinau.

The recycling process is a technological one, which changes the capacity of waste of an object, giving it an economic value. The reintroduction of waste on market is circular economy and represents a source of preservation of natural resources.
