Moldovan president says Moldova shares EU's values, deserves chance to be member of great European family

Chisinau, 18 June /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today conveyed a message to the members of the parliaments of Moldova and Romania at a joint meeting of the two legislative bodies, held in Chisinau, the presidential press service has reported.  

The head of state informed the lawmakers about the past which had put us to test more times, about the painful present marked by war, as well as about the future which we want to edify as member of the European Union.   

„I thanked Romania for the strong helping hand, which it had always provided us, no matter the political context in Chisinau, being with us in the economic, political, cultural and educational sectors. We feel this support also now, when we face the consequences of the war in Ukraine,’’ President Maia Sandu noted.   

At the same time, the head of state said that Romania’s evolution as EU member had encouraged Moldova and gave it hope that this can be a success model also for Moldova – and our citizens opted for this model as well.  

„Romania is presently our faithful backer, mobilizing the institutional and political support needed for our country’s European integration. And given that, on 17 June, the European Commission recommended that the EU member states give us the status of candidate for accession, I urged the Romanian MPs, on the days to come, to convey to EU the message the Moldova fully shares the values of the European Union. And that it deserves to be part of the great European family,’’ Maia Sandu said.   

According to the head of state, the joint meeting of the two parliaments logically and naturally fits into the ascendant relation between Moldova and Romania, re-launched in late 2020. ‘’I am confident that the today’s event will boost the cooperation between Chisinau and Bucharest for new projects for the benefit of the citizens from both countries,’’ President Maia Sandu added.
