Chisinau, June 20 / MOLDPRES /- The victims of the war on the Dniester, which broke out in the spring of 1992, were commemorated yesterday in Causeni. The program included flower arrangements at the Volunteer Monument in the city center, as well as a tribute and patriotic education meeting at the District House of Culture.
The participants in the events of 1992 describe June 19 as the bloodiest day because the fighting took place on the streets of Tighina, with the highest number of casualties among the military, as well as among the civilian population.
"It is a war that involved many Causeni people, given the fact that geographically we are in close proximity to the Transnistrian region. Eternal memory for the heroes of the nation who sacrificed their lives for the country and deep respect for the veterans of this war ", Causeni district head Nicolae Gorban said.
The conflict in the Transnistrian region broke out on March 2, 1992. The ceasefire took place on July 21, 1992, following the signing of an agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation.
The war was attended by about 28,000 fighters, soldiers and reservists of the National Army, employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Intelligence and Security Service, hundreds of volunteers and civilians. About four hundred people lost their lives and nearly 1,200 were injured. This conflict has also resulted in missing persons, including civilians.
In 2010, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova established March 2 as the Day of Remembrance for heroes fallen in the 1992 war to defend the territorial integrity and independence of the country. This year, MPs decided to rename Remembrance Day as Remembrance and Gratitude Day. Also, the Chisinau Parliament decided that 2022 should be declared the Year of Gratitude to war veterans, participants in the actions to fight for the defense of the integrity and independence of the Republic of Moldova.
