President commented on opportunity for foreign publications to grant Moldova status of EU candidate country

Chisinau, June 21 / MOLDPRES /- Granting the status of a candidate country for the Republic of Moldova is a geopolitical opportunity. President Maia Sandu made the statement in an article published in G4Media, El Pais, Le Figaro, Die Welt, Le Soir, Gazeta Wyborcza, Publico and La Repubblica.

According to the head of state, the Moldovan citizens' aspiration to join the European Union has become stronger during the thirty years of independence. "It was not a smooth process, but today we are at the point of a historic decision: to grant the Republic of Moldova the status of EU candidate country," said Maia Sandu.

The article was published in the context of the European Council meeting to be held on 23-24 June. The Council will adopt a decision on the granting of the Republic of Moldova the status of a candidate country for accession to the European Union.

The European Commission recommended on June 17 to the European Council to offer the Republic of Moldova the prospect of becoming a member of the European Union.
