Chisinau, 25 July /MOLDPRES/ - Over 61,000 people from Moldova hold about 75,000 lethal and non-lethal weapons. Law-enforcers periodically carry out actions of verifying the acts and conditions for preserving these weapons.

Contacted by MOLDPRES, the spokesman for the Interior Ministry (MAI), Daniel Mazepa, said that, to hold a weapon, citizens must present a string of confirmatory acts. ‘’It is about medical acts, certificate of arm’s origin, safe for preserving it and the lack of criminal record,’’ Mazepa said.

Since early, 2022, policemen have carried out over 62,000 controls at homes of weapon holders, in order to check the conditions of preservation, bearing and use of weapons from civil circulation. Following the infringements detected, law-enforcers submitted 72 procedures of withdrawal of the temporary or final right to hold weapons.

Also, policemen found out 33 offences committed with the use of weapons and documented 64 incidents with them. Law-enforcers annually identify about 500 weapons held illegally. According to MAI’s forecasts, this year, the number of these weapons might increase because of the situation in the region.

People who hold weapons illegally run the risk of punishments in form of non-remunerated labour or up to three years of imprisonment.
