More events to promote breastfeeding to be held this week

Chisinau, 23 Aug. /Moldpres/- Several breastfeeding promotion events will be organized on August 19-26 within the medical institutions from several localities of the country.

According to the Ministry of Health, several specialists in the field will familiarize future moms, parents with young children, but also refugee women about the benefits of breast milk and the correct breastfeeding modalities. At the same time, recommendations regarding the nutrition of babies and mothers will be offered.

The information events started in Balti and Florești and continues today in Hâncești, Călărași (August 24) and Ceadâr-Lunga (August 26). They are organized outdoors, on the territory of hospitals in each city and municipality.

The campaign is organized by the Ministry of Health and WHO Moldova, in collaboration with the USMF Nicolae Testemitanu and the Pediatric Society of the Republic of Moldova, the Center for Excellence in Medicine and Pharmacy Raisa Pacalo, the Nursing Association of the Republic of Moldova and the project "Momica breastfeeding" . The action is dedicated to the World La Breastfeeding Week, which is marked in the first week of August.

According to the National Agency for Public Health, in our country, about 78.4% of children were breastfed up to 6 months, up to one year this figure consisted 65.2% and up to 2 years over 6600 children were breastfed.

The World Health Organization (WHO) informed that about 820 thousand lives of children could be saved each year, if each child had breastfed for one hour after birth and were only offered breast milk in the first six months of life. WHO and UNICEF recommend the exclusive breastfeeding of the child up to six months and continuing the breastfeeding, with the gradual introduction of complementary nutrition, up to two years.
