Moldovan foreign affairs minister has more meetings in New York

Chisinau, 23 September /MOLDPRES/ - The agenda of the working visit to New York by the head of the Moldovan diplomacy, Nicu Popescu, at the high-level segment of the 77th session of the United Nations general Assembly, continued with bilateral meetings with Foreign Affairs Minister of Greece Nicos Dendias, Foreign Affairs Minister of Serbia Nikola Selaković, Foreign Affairs Minister of Turkey Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates from Jordan Ayman Al Safadi, Foreign Affairs Minister of India Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister of International Cooperation of Egypt Rania Al-Mashat, the Icelandic diplomacy head Thórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörd Gylfadóttir and Austrian Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Schallenberg, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) public diplomacy, strategic communication and media interaction service has reported.     

Deputy PM Nicu Popescu also participated in an informal meeting of the foreign affairs ministers of the member states of the Central European Initiative (CEI), an event organized under the patronage of the Bulgarian chairmanship of this organization.   

The Moldovan official was as special guest of Romania at the event on delivery of the mandate of chairman of the Community of Democracies on behalf of Romania’s Foreign Affairs Minister Bogdan Aurescu to Foreign Affairs Minister of Canada Mélanie Joly, at a ceremony held in New York.      

Deputy PM Nicu Popescu represented Moldova at a reception hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden in the honour of the heads of the national delegations on the occasion of the High-Level Segment of the UN General Assembly.   

Also, Minister Nicu Popescu took part in an event hosted by the secretary general of the International Organization of La Francophonie.   

At the same time, Nicu Popescu exchanged opinions with American officials: Deputy Assistant Administrator in the Bureau for Europe and Eurasia Mark Simakovsky, a member of the U.S. Congress House of Representatives, in the special committee on intelligence and bead of the sub-committee on modernization and training of intelligence services Eric Swalwell, an adviser at the Department of State, Derek Chollet, and the deputy assistant of the secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, Robin L. Dunningan.        

Traditionally in New York, the Moldovan diplomacy head discussed with the directorate of the international Jewish organizations, including the World Jewish Congress and the American Jewish Committee. ‘’I referred to the progress of the national policies on the promotion of tolerance and non-discrimination and informed about the actions undertaken by Moldova on the dimension of education, research and commemoration of the Holocaust.

Deputy PM Nicu Popescu had a meeting with Foreign Affairs Minister of Greece Nicos Dendias, with whom he discussed the reforms’ agenda for the irreversible course of Moldova’s European integration, implementation by the authorities of the action plan through those nine steps requested by the European Commission and aligning the country’s domestic policy with the European values shared by Moldova’s citizens.

Minister Nicu Popescu in New York met Foreign Affairs Minister of Serbia cu Nikola Selaković; both ministers expressed interest in the strengthening of the Moldovan-Serbian dialogue, especially on the economic dimension.   

„We agreed to start negotiations on an agreement due to provide more accessible prices for the roaming services paid by the citizens who travel to the two countries.   

We will also make an exchange of bilateral visits to Chisinau and Belgrade for boosting the Moldovan-Serbian dialogue,’’ the Moldovan official noted.

In New York, Deputy PM Nicu Popescu met his Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu. The officials made a synthesis of the mutual high-level visits from the last years and discussed the need to continuously turn to account the strategic cooperation between both countries, especially on the economic, investment and tourism dimensions.     

„We established new goals of cooperation for the next period, including the ensuring of the energy security, the war’s social and economic impact and other subjects of common interest.

We tackled with the Turkish minister the evolution of the security in the region, as Turkey has an important role in identifying solutions to the global food crisis, triggered by Russia’s war against Ukraine,’’ Nicu Popescu said.

Deputy PM Nicu Popescu also had a first-ever meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Jordan Ayman Al Safadi, as  Moldova marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with this country in 2022.   

„We set to work together with our teams for the promotion of tourism, increasing the exports of Moldovan agro-food products to Jordan and enhancing the contacts between business people from our states,’’ Minister Nicu Popescu specified.

In New York, Minister Nicu Popescu met Foreign Affairs minister of India Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.    

‘’This year, we mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the officials agreed on strengthening the bilateral dialogue, as well as the interaction at the multilateral level. 

I conveyed the interest of our farmers and exporters to freer access the Indian market, especially the exports of fruits, asking for the support of the New Delhi authorities.     

Also, for the promotion of the Moldovan-Indian economic diplomacy, we established to make visits by business people and foster the commercial cooperation.    

We also proposed to extend the dialogue on other subjects of mutual interest, such as the agriculture’s digitalization, the medical and education fields,’’ Deputy PM Nicu Popescu stressed.

We continue developing mutually beneficial relations with the countries of the world. Deputy PM Nicu Popescu had a meeting with International Cooperation Minister of Egypt Rania Al-Mashat.  

A subject of increased interest was the re-launch of the negotiations for the signing of the free trade agreement, which will substantially contribute to the consolidation of the commercial and economic relations between the two countries and will generate new opportunities for the agrarian sector, interested in the Egyptian market.

Minister Nicu Popescu in New York participated in an informal meeting of the foreign affairs ministers of the member states of the Central European Initiative (CEI).

„I conveyed to the Sofia diplomacy head, Nikolay Milkov, the appreciation for the activity and efforts made to achieve the goals set, despite the constraints and geopolitical developments in the region.  

The high-level meeting gave us possibility to speak about ways of strengthening the relations between the member states, all participating countries being deeply anchored in the European project and we want this effort to be strengthened also under the aegis of Moldova’s chairmanship, which will start next year.    

At the event, I reaffirmed Moldova’s commitment, as state candidate for accession to EU, to the promotion and implementation of regional projects, with direct impact on the economic development of our countries,’’ Nicu Popescu said.

At a meeting with Deputy Assistant Administrator in the Bureau for Europe and Eurasia Mark Simakovsky in New York, Deputy PM Nicu Popescu referred to the projects which contribute to the improvement of the living standards, ensuring a democratic governance, speeding up the growth of the private sector and not less important, the backing of the justice reform, energy resilience and freedom of media in Moldova.

Minister Nicu Popescu met a member of the U.S. Congress House of Representatives, in the special committee on intelligence and bead of the sub-committee on modernization and training of intelligence services Eric Swalwell.

„The discussions were focused on the bipartisan support of the resolutions voted in the U.S. legislative body, which expresses support for Moldova’s citizens in our efforts to consolidate the good governance, to eradicate corruption, to back the energy resilience, ensure stability, cyber security and protect the territorial integrity of the country,’’ the Moldovan official said.
