Chisinau, 26 October /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita today evening gave a news conference, during which she welcomed the U.S. Government’s decision to impose sanctions for a string of politicians and political entities from Moldova, whom it included in the Global Magnitsky Act, called also Magnitsky Law.

„I thank all citizens who believed in our governance, who believed in the country’s president and the decisions taken by the parliament and government. The Magnitsky Law announced by the USA today is a confirmation of all our measures to counteract corruption and call to account all people concerned in the files with high impact,’’ Natalia Gavrilita said.

The PM was accompanied by Justice Minister Sergiu Litvinenco at the news conference. The minister said, for his part, that no matter the citizenship held at present, the thieves and traitors to the country would be sanctioned. ‘’No kind passport will help them,’’ Litvinenco stressed.

The United States Department of the Treasury has imposed sanctions against the former president of the Moldovan Democratic Party (PDM), Vladimir Plahotniuc, and the leader of the Shor Party, Ilan Shor. U.S. Ambassador to Moldova Kent Logsdon made statements to this effect at a news briefing today.  ‘’The United States Department of the Treasury has announced sanctions against two Moldovan oligarchs, Vladimir Plahotniuc and Ilan Shor, as well as more entities and people associated to them for actions dealing with systemic corruption and interference with elections. The inclusion in the list of the sanctioned persons means that any assets owned by Vladimir Plahotniuc and Ilan Shor, which are in the USA, are blocked and must be reported to the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the American Treasury. The United States shows once again that it is with you in fighting corruption,’’ the ambassador said.

Kent Logsdon stressed that, besides the sanctions imposed, the USA had taken measures to counteract the persistent companies of Russia’s government in Moldova. Thus, sanctions were approved against Russian persons and entities.
