Chisinau, Oct. 28 /MOLDPRES/- Pupils and teaching staff from the Gymnasium in Cazaclia village, Ceadâr-Lunga district, will benefit from modern sanitary services, with the support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Romanian government and the Executive of Găgăuzia, UNDP announced today.

Ensuring hygiene standards will be possible thanks to the support provided through the UNDP project Enhancing quality of education through digital transformation and education facilities improvement: pilot project in Gagauzia. The Romanian government earmarked 50 thousand euros through RoAid - Romanian Agency for International Development and the Executive of Găgăuzia - 50 thousand dollars. The contribution of the United Nations Development Program from Moldova is about 15 thousand dollars.

The educational institution that will benefit from investments in sanitation was selected in partnership with the Executive of Gagauzia. "We support this initiative, which we consider vital. Pupils must have access to hygienic conditions and modern toilets, equipped according to sanitary standards. Correct hygiene will provide children with the necessary norms for health protection and correct personal development. And educating students in hygiene is the best way to avoid the spread of infections and diseases, thus contributing to the growth of a healthy generation", Cazaclia gymnasium's head Anna Uzun said.

Thanks to the support of the project, a mini-treatment plant will be built. Sewerage and pipe installation works will be carried out, as well as the construction of sanitary blocks inside the institution. The blocks will be adapted for people with disabilities. In partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), awareness campaigns will be organized for community members about the need to observe hygiene measures.

Most rural educational institutions in the Republic of Moldova do not have sanitary facilities that meet the standards. Only 29% of rural pupils said they have toilets inside their schools. At the same time, only 13 percent of the children said that the existing toilets are adapted to the needs of people with disabilities and 75% mentioned the inadequate hygienic situation in the toilets.
