Chisinau, 28 October /MOLDPRES/ - Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Nicu Popescu has continued the schedule of his visit to London with the participation in the European Summit for Climate and Security, at an invitation by the former minister for Europe, David Lidington. The event is organized by the Conservative Environment Network, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) press service has reported.

The Moldovan official gave a speech, in which he pointed out that:

• For Moldova, the energy security is the foremost concern;

•  The government acts based on a plan, the goal of which is to strengthen the capacity to respond to the greatest energy challenge in the history of the country;

• The Moldovan authorities are determined to ensure a sustainable supply - and at accessible prices – with gas and electricity, mobilizing, at the same time, funds to cushion the impact on the vulnerable citizens;

• At the same time, when the energy resource is used to prevent Moldova from consolidating its democracy and following an independent foreign policy, the green transition becomes an issue of survival, a clear need for the country’s European future.

On the sidelines of the Summit, Minister Nicu Popescu had a meeting Minister of State for Security of the United Kingdom Tom Tugendhat, who acted as head of Committee on Foreign Affairs of the British parliament. The officials analyzed practical ways of support for the domestic affairs sector.

„In a discussion with President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Odile Renaud-Basso, we agreed on working with our teams for additional support for the country’s energy security: funds for procurements of gas, energy efficiency of public buildings and private companies and a strengthening of our capacity to cope with the energy challenges,’’ the Moldovan diplomacy head said.

Also, on his working agenda, the Moldovan official had a meeting also at the Chatham House with representatives of international media and analytical centres from London. Nicu Popescu discussed the current developments in Moldova, including in the Transnistrian region, efforts in the fight against corruption, determination to carry out the justice reform and in other fields, in order to fulfill the Moldovan citizens’ European aspirations.

„At the meetings with British PM’s National Security Adviser Tim Barrow, and Director General for Defence and Intelligence at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office Thomas Drew, the Moldovan minister referred to the country’s European integration, the challenges in the present security environment, especially in the energy sector, as well as the needs of support for Moldova. In the conditions of Russia’s unjustified war against Ukraine, we exchanged opinions on the border security, consolidating the cooperation in the domestic affairs and defence sectors. We also discussed the organization of the Summit of the European Political Community in Moldova next year.

I thank our excellent team from Moldova’s Embassy in London, which ensured a dynamic and intense agenda, which allowed strengthening the Moldovan-British strategic dialogue,’’ Deputy PM Nicu Popescu said.
