Central Electoral Commission marks 25 years of work

Chisinau, Nov. 21 /MOLDPRES/- The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) today marks 25 years of work.

The institution has been operating since the adoption of the Electoral Code, on November 21, 1997, a document that unified all legislative acts related to presidential, parliamentary and local elections. By the same law, the Commission was established as a body with permanent status.

According to the CEC, in the 25 years, the institution ensured the conduct of nine parliamentary elections, two presidential elections, six general local elections, three national referendums and numerous new local elections. Also, the CEC was led by eight presidents and had six components.

In its activity, the institution aims to ensure the organization of free and fair elections. The smooth conduct of any type of national election is ensured by about 22 thousand electoral officials.

On the occasion of the anniversary, the CEC will organize several activities, including an international conference Electoral reform - pillar of the consolidation of participatory democracy, which will be attended by electoral experts representing more than 20 electoral authorities from abroad, national and international profile organizations.
