Moldovan government approves signing of agreement on loan for waste management in Moldova

Chisinau, 23 November /MOLDPRES/ - The infrastructure of management of solid waste will be developed with the financial support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). In this respect, the cabinet today approved the signing of an agreement on loan worth 25 million euros for the carrying out of the Solid Waste in Moldova project, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.      

Following the agreement’s ratification, the first waste management infrastructure will be developed in the RMD5 region, which includes the Ungheni, Nisporeni and Calarasi districts. The works on a modern field of waste management, according to the European standards, will start in 2023.    

The project’s goal is to construct the infrastructure of solid waste management and to buy equipment for transport, sorting, recycling, composting, such as: dust bins and containers for collecting waste (from gate to gate and collection points), vehicles for the collection and carriage of waste, building of stations for sorting, composting and transfer. The programme sees also the liquidation of over 1,600 unauthorized waste deposits.     

Also, infrastructure works will continue within RMD8 – the districts of Edinet, Donduseni, Ocnita, Briceni; RMD1 – the districts of Cahul, Cantemir, Taraclia, as well as the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia (Comrat, Vulcanesti and Ceadar-Lunga).    

The Solid Waste in Moldova project was worked out in the context of the commitments taken by Moldova in the sustainable development sector. Following the negotiations on the agreement on loan, Moldova will contribute to the fulfillment of the performance indexes for the Sustainable Development Goal 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities. 

The project will be implemented during 2023-2027 and the agreement’s validity term is up to 15 years, with a grace period of four years.
