Chisinau, 1 December /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu has welcomed UNESCO’s decision, announced today, under which the Romanian national shirt was included in the list of the intangible cultural heritage of the mankind.

„We have a nice piece of news today – the art of the national shirt, an element of cultural identity on both banks of the Prut river, was included in the list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The happiness is even greater through the fact that the UNESCO decision on this joint file of Moldova and Romania comes on 1 December – a special day for the Romanians from everywhere,’’ said the head of state, according to the presidential press service.

Maia Sandu expressed gratitude for the effort of the two countries’ representatives, who had worked for the inclusion of this element of the Romanian cultural heritage in the list of the world heritage.

„I congratulate the Chisinau and Bucharest teams, which consistently promoted the national shirt at UNESCO. I thank the artisans who, through work and self-denial, preserved this art, made it revive and be known in the world. For the enduring of a century-old symbol, which tells the story of our nation, eternalized by our mothers and grandmothers on the national Romanian shirts and conveyed to the new generations,’’ the head of state added.
