Moldovan PM says country further needs quick instruments to protect its people

Chisinau, 1 December /MOLDPRES/ - The state of emergency has been extended by another 60 days in Moldova starting from 6 December 2022. The decision today was approved with the votes of the majority of the lawmakers, at a request by the cabinet, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.   

In the parliament’s plenum, Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita referred to the consequences and risks of the unjust war waged by Russia against Ukraine, stressing that they were felt in Moldova in continuation. The bombardments against the energy infrastructure of Ukraine triggered massive disconnections in the electric energy system of Moldova. At the same time, the crossing of Moldova’s air space by Russian missiles jeopardized the security of the civil aviation and the missile fallen in the Naslavcea settlement one month ago caused serious damages and endangered the security of Moldovan citizens.    

According to the PM, as the destructions caused by the Russian bombardments grow more and more, an increase in the flow of people from Ukraine who come to Moldova is recorded. In November alone, by 2,000 people more coming from Ukraine were registered against October 2022. If these attacks continue, there is a real possibility for this number to grow. Also, there is deficit in the supply with energy and natural gas, a boosting of the actions from the hybrid war is recorded.        

„The recent developments show us that Moldova is in an unprecedented situation, in which the institutions further need quick instruments to intervene, when the people’s life and safety are endangered, when the social and economic activities are interrupted or when innocent people are oblige to flee from the unjust and merciless war. Day after day, we must find solutions to have electric energy and gas. If the state of emergency was not declared, we would not have been able to help the companies from the energy sector, would not have had the legal instruments to instruct the stocking of natural gas and would not have been able to quickly purchase electric energy from Romania and the people would have remained in darkness,’’ Natalia Gavrilita said.  

The prime minister emphasized the need to introduce new instruments in the constitutional and legal frameworks, due to allow the government act quickly also outside the emergency state. In this respect, the Justice Ministry works on a draft, through which the cabinet will be able to adopt emergency ordinances which can be immediately enforced, but afterwards subjected to parliamentary and constitutional control. ‘’This process is a long-lasting one, while we need leverages not in the future, but at present. I want it to make quite clear that the government I lead has all openness for strengthening the parliamentary control over its decisions. We want full transparency and act in the interests of the people,’’ the prime minister also said.
