Moldovan PM has meeting with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

Chisinau, 8 December /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk discussed the progress made by Moldova in the promotion of human rights at a meeting today, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
The PM thanked the High Commissioner for the expertise and support provided in the process of implementing the UN mechanisms concerning the protection of human rights, noting that Moldova paid increased attention to this field.
„Despite the challenges we face – the energy crisis and the one of refugees, the worrying security situation in the region – the authorities are fully committed into the process of reform of justice, fighting corruption and money laundering, adjusting the legislation to the European standards, as well as improving the system of protection of human rights,’’ Natalia Gavrilita said.
The prime minister also referred to the programmes worked out by the cabinet to back the vulnerable people and the social categories which had suffered in the wake of the economic energy crises. The PM also touched upon the documents approved in the field of combating the trafficking of human beings, promotion of human rights and gender equality, fighting the violence.
This year, Moldova ratified the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating of Violence against Women and Domestic Violence. A first report on the document’s implementation was approved at the first meeting of the National Council for Human Rights, chaired by Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita.
During the discussion, the sides set the need of preventing actions which attempt against the human rights in the Transnistrian region and analyzed possibility of the involvement of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in the dialogue with Tiraspol.
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk appreciated the government’s actions in the field of human rights’ protection and thanked, on behalf of the entire international community, for the efforts made to manage the refugees’ crisis.
