Old-style Orthodox Christians mark holiday of St. Basil the Great

Chisinau, 14 January /MOLDPRES/ - The Old-style orthodox Christians today mark the holiday of Saint Basil the Great, the Archbishop of Caesarea of Cappadocia.  This day ends the cycle of the winter holidays and marks the beginning of the New Year, according to the Julian calendar.    

In the tough times for the Church, St. Basil the Great was a hot defender of the Orthodox faith. By uninterrupted fasting and prayer, he acquired the grace of the clear-sightedness and the power to make miracles and miraculously treat sick people. Known with the name of Basil the Great, he is one of the most important fathers of the Orthodox Church and one of the greatest Christian theologians.  

On the morning of 14 January, children throw seeds of wheat, maize, oats and bless the family. The seeds falling in the yard or dwelling symbolize the faith into a prosperous year, with a rich harvest.      

According to statistics data, in Moldova, about 57,000 men are baptized Vasile (Basil) and another 16,000 bear the name of Vasili. Among women, the most popular name is Vasilisa, bourn by more than 4,000 women.
