Chisinau, 23 February /MOLDPRES/ - Romania firmly condemns any attempt of Russia to destabilize the situation in Moldova. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis today made statements to this effect at a joint news briefing with his Moldovan counterpart Maia Sandu, on an official visit to Romania.

According to Klaus Iohannis, Romania will continue supporting the observance of Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.

„The threats from abroad are worrying, but we will not yield. We asked for the sanctioning of those who are set to carry out actions of destabilizing in Moldova. One year ago, Russia was preparing to attack Ukraine, which triggered a period of crisis of historical proportions. This was an extremely difficult year for Moldova – a state directly hit by the consequences of this war. The country’s leaders were up to the mark in terms of the challenges and coped with the energy crisis, economic imbalance, crisis of refugees and the attacks meant to hinder the country’s European integration. All these difficulties were managed calmly and with professionalism. I welcome the commitments of the new Moldovan government in the process of reformation for Moldova’s European integration. The relation between our countries becomes more and more solid, as we have edified an open, sincere and efficient cooperation,’’ Klaus Iohannis said.

For her part, President Maia Sandu stressed that the new government of Moldova would continue an active dialogue with Romania. In this respect, Prime Minister Dorin Recean will pay an official visit to Romania next week.

„Today we felt the strong support for Moldova’s citizens and for the country’s European integration. The partnership with Romania brings multiple benefits for the citizens and the joint projects help us resist on this complicated period. Romania is with us, for which we thank you on behalf of our citizens. Despite all crises, our country remains intact, worthy and resolute on its way to the European Union. Moldova will continue investing in energy diversification and independence, so that nobody can blackmail our country. We know where we go and what we have to do. We will consolidate the defence capacities; we will become more resistant and stronger. A year of economic reconstruction, continuation reforms and strengthening of the state’s security come next,’’ the Moldovan official said.

President Maia Sandu is on an official visit to Romania, at an invitation by President Klaus Iohannis. The Moldovan delegation includes also Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Nicu Popescu and the agenda comprises meetings with other Romanian officials as well.
