Blood donation campaign launched in Moldova

Chisinau, 1 March /MOLDPRES/ - Fifty four public medical and sanitary institutions will get involved in a voluntary campaign of donation of blood and blood components, launched today. The campaign, in which the medical staff participates, is organized by the Health Ministry and the National Blood Transfusion Centre (CNTS) and will be carried out during March this year.
According to the Health Ministry, the first collections of blood today were made at the Balti Clinical Hospital, where over 2,000 blood bags and about 2,000 plasma bags were used last year alone.
The quoted source said that, to supply the medical institutions with the needed quantities of blood products, in order to provide blood transfusion assistance to patients, it is necessary that 70,000 blood donations to be made during one year. Sufficient stocks will be provided only with the support of voluntary and systematic donors.
Specialists say that people interested can donate a quantity of 450 ml of blood four times per year, at an interval of at least two months between donations. The blood is collected from healthy people, with ages from 18 to 60 years and the procedure lasts about ten minutes.
