Chisinau, 3 March /MOLDPRES/ - Over 60 per cent of the Moldovan exports go to European markets, one year after the submission of the application on Moldova’s accession to the European Union. Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Nicu Popescu has made statements to this effect at a news briefing.

The Moldovan diplomacy head noted that the getting of the status of country candidate had been possible due to the efforts of diplomats and the leadership of Moldova.

„It is absolutely vital for our country, for our society to bring Moldova to the European Union and through this fact, to preserve peace and freedom on our territory. Last year, we had along with the former PM, Natalia Gavrilita and President Maia Sandu more than 150 meetings with counterparts and officials from various countries and institutions. Their goal was to persuade the EU member countries to back the process of Moldova’s accession. In the last year, we have worked a lot also with the colleagues from all state institutions, civil society, Diaspora, in order to answer the questionnaires sent by the European Commission to Moldova,’’ Popescu said.

Nicu Popescu noted that, during these months, the Moldovan authorities had worked with European institutions, in order to solve more problems and plan the future actions with EU, European Council and European Parliament.

According to the quoted source, also due to EU, Moldova managed to cope with the energy crisis and more native products have access to European markets.

“Last year, goods worth 2.5 billion dollars were exported to the EU market, about 60 per cent of all Moldova’s exports, as EU is the most important commercial partner of the country,’’ Popescu said.

The foreign affairs minister also said that the main goal set by the current leadership was for Moldova to join the European Union till 2030.
