Moldovan, OSCE officials approach media issues

Chisinau, March 4. /MOLDPRES/- Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration had a meeting with Teresa Ribeiro, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of Media, who pays a working visit to Chisinau.

According to the MAEIE press service, the Moldovan official reiterated the firm commitment of the authorities of the Republic of Moldova to respect human rights, including freedom of expression and freedom of media, as well as ensuring access to information, respecting the safety of journalists.

"I appreciated the activity of the OSCE representative, as well as the official's interest in the media situation in Moldova, taking into account the circumstances of regional realities and the importance of access to correct information. I mentioned in this context that our country managed to rise in 2022 by 49 positions in the Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders, now ranking 40th out of 180 countries.

I also emphasized the determination regarding the implementation of the deoligarization commitment by eliminating the influence of private interests in the media field.

In the context of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, we referred to the numerous hybrid threats facing the Republic of Moldova as well as the measures adopted to combat propaganda, disinformation and hate speech," said Popescu.
