Chisinau, March 7. /MOLDPRES/- Producers and traders in the food sector will have the obligation to ensure that trans fatty acids (TFA) do not exceed 2/100 grams of fat in the food content, the government's communication and protocol department has reported.

The government set at the initiative of the Ministry of Health the maximum TFA content allowed in processed food products. The provision was introduced in the Health Regulation regarding the addition of vitamins and minerals, as well as certain other substances in food products.

The decision to limit the amount of trans fats in food products was taken to guarantee a high level of consumer health protection. This is one of the measures by which the authorities propose to prevent heart disease and stroke, in the context in which the consumption of TFA in food increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and other chronic diseases.

The government decision covers substances whose use in food products generates concerns for the health of the population. It intervened by adjusting the lists of substances prohibited to be used, those subject to restrictions and those under control, in accordance with European legislation.
