Moldovan president urges citizens not to burn dry grass on lands

Chisinau, 13 March /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu has urged citizens not to burn dry grass on lands. The warning was made, given the increase in the number of fires of vegetation.

According to the official, the cleaning of lands through burning, in conditions of wind and dry weather, can lead to the burning of woods, communications lines, gas pipes or even living houses.

„A new agricultural season starts and many people, including farmers, choose to burn dry grass, in order to clean the fields - a vicious practice, which brings much discomfort and endangers the lives of the people who live nearby the burning land. The practice harms the environment: the fire burns the organic substance from the soil, destroys the microflora, kills the beneficial insects, the field birds and animals and  quite a long period of time is needed for reestablishment,’’ Maia Sandu said on a social network.

To combat these prejudicial practices, the fines were increased for those who infringe the legislation and set fire on stubbles and dry vegetation last year. ‘’The fine for private people can reach up to 15,000 lei (about 750 euros) and for legal entities – up to 40,000 lei. The setting fire on stubbles is a barbarian habit, which must be eliminated; our responsibility is to take care of the nature and of the beloved people,’’ the official noted.

Since early 2023, employees of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) have carried out about 300 interventions to cease the burning of dry vegetation, which compromised more than 830 hectares of land. Last week, 612 hectares of lands were burned and firemen intervened in 217 cases to extinguish fires.
