Chisinau, 2 May /MOLDPRES/ - Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu today had a meeting with Romania’s National Defence Minister Angel Tîlvăr. The discussions were focused on the security challenges faced by Moldova at present, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

The parliament speaker referred to the hybrid threats Moldova is facing and the authorities’ efforts to respond to these challenges. ‘’The institutions prove a capacity to anticipate and react in time, in order to discourage Russia’s intentions. We also record collaboration between the state’s institutions in the defence and security sector,’’ Igor Grosu said.

Also, the parliament speaker touched upon the authorities’ efforts to modernize the army. In the context, Igor Grosu expressed gratitude for the support provided by Romania, including through the organization of joint exercises with the participation of Moldovan servicemen. ‘’This year, we doubled the budget for defence. We are determined to identify financial sources, in order to invest, in continuation, in the army. There are many challenges and we must respond to them,’’ the parliament speaker stressed.

Another subject of the discussion was the Meeting of the European Political Community, due on 1 June. ‘’We are aware that, ahead of this event, the security dangers might be enhanced. At the same time, the summit is an extra occasion for us to speak about our priorities in the European integration process. We have a clear-cut goal: to start the negotiations till the end of this year,’’ the speaker said.

The officials also discussed the need to optimize the parliamentary and civil control over the army. At the same time, the Romanian minister expressed openness to provide, in continuation, support to Moldova, both on international platforms and bilaterally.
