Chisinau, 9 May /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today participated in an event on the commemoration of those who had lost their lives during the World War II, the presidential press service has reported.

„Today we commemorate those over 50 million people who lost their lives during the Second World War and the heroes dead, those who made the supreme sacrifice – defended the right to life with their own lives. On 9 May, we honour our grandfathers and great-grandfathers, who paid the tough price of the war, in order to defend their family, nation, dignity. They sacrificed themselves, so that the life triumphs, so that the war never enters their homes. As nobody of those who experienced the war would like such a tragedy for their children and grandchildren,’’ the Moldovan president said.

In her message, the head of state also said that the war ‘’brings death, suffering and destruction.’’ ‘’No man who loves his family and country can be on the side of the crimes. And those who start wars do not attach value either on the honour of the heroes dead for the defence of the Motherland or on the human life. During decades following the finishing of the war, the 9 May day was marked as the last day of war and the first day of peace. Unfortunately, there is war in Europe again, children and old people, men and women are killed in the neighbour country. The unity of those who defend the life, peace and human dignity will make the life triumph!’’

At the same time, President Maia Sandu stressed that the entire world 80 years ago had united to stop the Nazism and put an end to terror, crimes and concentration camps. ‘’The free world is now uniting to oppose the war. It is up to us to do our utmost for the life and peace to win. Eternal memory to those who died on battlefield! We bow before the veterans for sacrifice and devotion and to all those who presently dedicate their lives to defend the peace, right to life and to freedom,’’ the head of state added.
