Chisinau, May 15 /MOLDPRES/- Speaker Igor Grosu announced today the initiation of the procedure for the withdrawal of the Republic of Moldova from the Agreement on the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

"After several discussions with the citizens in the territory, within the PAS parliamentary faction, after consultations with the president of the country and the representatives of the Government, I announce that I have taken the decision to initiate the procedure for the withdrawal of the Republic of Moldova from the Agreement on the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly. After 30 years, it became very clear that Moldova's inclusion in the CIS structures did not help us resolve the Transnistrian conflict, did not help us remove the Russian army from the territory of our country, did not protect us from economic embargoes, did not protect from energy blackmail in the winter, threats and hostile statements", Grosu said.

The speaker noted that this is a first step, and the next steps that would be taken in this regard are being evaluated at the parliament and government level.

Grosu added that, according to the procedures, at the next ordinary meeting of the standing bureau, he will submit the proposal to request Prime Minister Dorin Recean to prepare the legislative initiative on the denunciation of the Convention on the Interparliamentary Assembly of CIS member states.

The Commonwealth of Independent States was set up in 1991. The Republic of Moldova ratified the Agreement on setting up the Community in 1994.
