Moldovan PM says bashkan of Gagauz Autonomy must be elected under legislation

Chisinau, 17 May /MOLDPRES/ - The bashkan (governor) of the Autonomous Territorial Unit Gagauz-Yeri must be elected according to Moldova’s legislation and under the specific legislation of the autonomy. Prime Minister Dorin Recean made statements to this effect in the beginning of a today’s cabinet meeting.    

„Nobody will elect the bashkan instead of the citizens from the autonomy, neither Chisinau, nor Moscow, nor those who are somewhere else, instead of coming here to serve the punishment. The bashkan must be elected according to Moldova’s legislation and under the specific legislation of the autonomy. And this will happen. I call on everybody to be calm. The Constitution guarantees to all citizens the right to a fair trial. The problems which were identified and the documents will be submitted to court and the latter will take a decision. The elections, no matter what kind, in any region of Moldova, must be according to the legislation and within the procedures established by the country’s governance system,’’ Dorin Recean said.      

The PM also said that the cabinet would work in continuation, in order to ensure the public services of the citizens from the autonomy. ‘’We will work with the mayors, we will work directly with the citizens, we will work with all those who are elected by the citizens from the autonomy, who should represent their interests. What we will not do is to work with the people who represent other interests but the interests of the citizens from the autonomy,’’ the prime minister stressed.   

The runoff of the elections of the governor (bashkan) of the Gagauz-Yeri took place on 14 May. According to data presented by the electoral commission from Comrat, Evghenia Gutul won the ballot.
