Moldova's Equality Council marks ten years of work

Chisinau, 24 May /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Dorin Recean today participated in an international conference titled, The equality institutions: new standards, new challenges, occasioned by the marking of the tenth anniversary of the work of the Equality Council, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.  

Attending the event were Head of the European Union’s Delegation in Moldova Janis Mazeiks, Head of the Council of Europe’s Council in Chisinau Giulia Fe, Deputy Parliament Speaker Mihai Popsoi and the head of the Equality Council, Yan Feldman.     

In his greeting speech, the PM highlighted the importance of the entire society’s involvement in the observance of the human rights, as well as in the promotion of equality and non-discrimination.    

„Today, we mark the tenth anniversary of the Equality Council. I am happy that we, as society, have mobilized to protect the human rights and advance on the legislative and institutional agenda. Just as in the European countries, the right to equality is recognized and promoted, in the context of more international instruments and in accordance with our country’s legislation. Everybody needs to mobilize in the way of changing the society’s culture and perception. We should be capable to respect all citizens, no matter their social or cultural options. We must be a united, involved and responsible society,’’ Prime Minister Dorin Recean said.       

The participants in the event referred to the measures and actions undertaken, in order to prevent and combat the discrimination phenomenon, as well as to the current challenges and perspectives for the future. The speakers also touched upon the imperativeness to consolidate the partnership between the governmental actors and the civil society, so that a better protection of the victims and vulnerable groups is ensured.       

The Equality Council was set up in 2013 as autonomous, impartial and independent public authority, with an essential role in the promotion of equality and combating the discrimination and intolerance in Moldova.
