Chisinau, June 2. /MOLDPRES/- For the Republic of Moldova and President Maia Sandu, the supportive presence of high-ranking foreign leaders at the Summit of the European Political Community (EPC) represents a moment of great national hope, writes The Guardian.
According to an article published by The Guardian, the EPC Summit is a chance to welcome the former Soviet republic to the West. "Had Russian President Vladimir Putin succeeded in overrunning Ukraine last year, it is believed his troops would have swept through the Transnistrian region and 'taken over the rest of the country.' Without a doubt, the Republic of Moldova remains a target of Russia. This is because, like the Ukrainians, many Moldovans see their future in the west, in the European Union", the article reads.
The Guardian also wrote about the European Moldova National Assembly, which took place on May 21 in the center of the capital. "More than 75 thousand people participated, along with President Maia Sandu, in a rally held in Chisinau, where citizens demanded full membership in the EU," notes The Guardian.
Last June, the EU granted the Republic of Moldova the status of a candidate country for EU accession, allocated millions of euros to Moldova and contributed to reducing dependence on Russian gas. The source noted that, at the European Moldova National Assembly, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola assured that the EU will welcome the Republic of Moldova "with open arms and an open heart".
