General local elections in Moldova: period of nominating candidates for elective positions in electoral districts of second level starts on 6 September

Chisinau, 5 September /MOLDPRES/ - The period of nominating candidates for the elective positions for the electoral constituencies of the second level – district, municipal councils, the mayors of the Chisinau and Balti municipalities – will start on 6 September.  

According to the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), the nomination of candidates takes place following the creation of the constituency electoral council, but not earlier than 60 days before the day of elections.

The political parties registered till the date of the entrance into force of the CEC’s decision on the setting of the date of the general local elections, the electoral blocs set up and registered in the conditions provided for in the Electoral Code and of the Instruction on the peculiarities of the creation and registration of electoral blocs, independent candidates have right to nominate candidates for elections.    

„The procedure of nomination of candidates for the position of mayor and councilor in the local council takes place: in the case of the political parties and electoral blocs – through approval, during meetings of the competent bodies, in accordance with the statutory provisions or, as case may be, with the agreements on their creation, confirmed through official reports, of the decisions on the nomination of candidates for the office of mayor and the list of candidates for the position of councilor in the local council. At the same time, in case of the independent candidates – through the putting forward of one’s own candidacy for the office of mayor or councilor in the local council, the creation of the initiative group for the collection of signatures for his/her support,’’ reads a CEC’s press release.  

The procedure of nomination of independent candidates includes also the stage of collection of signatures by the people who put forward their own candidacy or the initiative groups, in order to back the candidates for the position of mayor and councilor in the local council.   

The forms of the subscription lists will be able to be requested from the constituency electoral council of the second level starting from 19 September 2023.

The general local elections will be held on 5 November.
