Construction of Vulcanesti–Chisinau electric line advances with 76 per cent progress in project's implementation
The work on the Vulcanesti–Chisinau high-voltage electric line is advancing, with more than half of the required poles already erected. At the same time, the first kilometers of cables have been set. So far, the project is approximately 76-per cent complete, encompassing all stages from design and equipment delivery to construction and installation.
According to the Ministry of Energy, 462 of the 507 foundations for the poles have been completed, reflecting a 91-per cent progress rate. Concurrently, 334 poles have been assembled and 274 erected, which is more than half of the planned total. Moreover, the electric cables have been laid over a length of more than 12 kilometers out of a total of 157 kilometers, marking the first 5 per cent of the line.
Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu visited the construction site today and emphasized the importance of this project for the country's energy future. According to him, the Vulcanesti-Chisinau power line will eliminate the vulnerability to the Kuchurgan Power Plant.
“This high-voltage electric line will allow Moldova to stably and securely connect to the European electricity network through Romania. The project directly contributes to strengthening the country's energy independence and reducing the risks of power supply interruptions,” said Dorin Junghietu.
At the same time, the modernization of the Chisinau electric station, an essential part of the project, has reached a 67-per cent completion rate. Currently, the installation of equipment is underway, with most of the construction and earthworks nearing completion.
The Vulcanesti-Chisinau power line will stretch 157 kilometers. Thus, over 500 poles and 1,500 kilometers of conductors will create a strategic link between the south and center, crossing eight districts and 35 localities.
Depending on the electric power system regime, the line can ensure the transit of up to 630 MVA of power, which could meet 50 per cent of energy consumption during peak demand periods.
The construction of the Vulcanesti-Chisinau Electric Line is a project of strategic importance for the energy security of our country. The new power line will allow the transmission of electricity from Romania or other European markets to Chisinau, without passing through the Moldovan Power Plant, located in the Transnistrian region.
The construction work on the Vulcanesti-Chisinau power line officially started in April 2024 and is part of the Power System Development Project, funded by the World Bank Group. Its value is 61 million euros, of which around 27 million euros is meant for the line's construction.
