Domestic energy consumption covered 79 percent by renewables at midday on Thursday
A share of 79 percent of Moldova’s domestic electricity consumption was covered today at midday by renewable energy sources.
“Almost 79% of the domestic electricity consumption of 367.4 MW at 12:00 was today covered by renewable energy sources,” the Ministry of Energy announced.
Thus, renewable energy production amounted to 289 MW at that hour, under favorable weather conditions. Of the total volume, solar energy accounted for over 213 MW, wind for 53.8 MW, hydropower for over 21 MW, and biogas for 0.8 MW. In addition, thermal power plants were generating 280.9 MW.
Under these conditions, renewables exceeded, at the indicated time, the generation of thermal power plants and produced almost three times more energy than the Moldovan power plant MGRES, the Ministry of Energy reported.
According to statistics, over the last five years the Republic of Moldova has recorded a twelvefold increase in installed renewable electricity capacity—from 77.37 MW in 2020 to almost 1,000 MW at the beginning of this year.
In the summer of last year, the country reached a historic milestone in green energy production. On Saturday, August 23, at 12:00, the country’s electricity consumption was fully covered by local energy production from renewable sources.
