Moldova's National Road Transport Agency warns carriers: EU to introduce electronic EES system at the Schengen border starting from October 12

International road transport operators from Moldova and citizens traveling to the Schengen area need to prepare for a major change: starting from October 12, 2025, the European Union will implement the electronic border control system – Entry/Exit System (EES), with reference to the National Road Transport Agency (ANTA).

According to the European Commission, the implementation will be carried out gradually over six months throughout all EU member states and associated Schengen countries.

"Upon the first entry after the system becomes operational, travelers will undergo a digital registration process: name and type of travel document; biometric data (fingerprints and facial image); date and place of entry or exit. The EES system is meant to detect overstaying, prevent document and identity fraud and gradually replace passports’ stamping," the source said.

The National Road Transport Agency emphasizes that the new procedure applies to citizens of Moldova as well – both those traveling with a short-stay visa and those exempted from a visa, at the crossing of the EU external border, including through Romania.

"The launch of the EES system marks a significant step towards a safer and more efficient mechanism for managing the borders of the European Union, providing modern and transparent control over traveler flows," reads the ANTA release.

For international road transport operators, this system means a more rigorous yet more rapid, digitized procedure in the long term. Details and official announcements can be found on the ANTA website: anta.gov.md and on the official portals of the European Commission on Travel Europe and the EES system.
