Moldova to have first electrified railway: Iași – Ungheni line modernized with EU support

The Republic of Moldova is preparing to enter a new stage of railway infrastructure modernization by electrifying its first railway segment. This involves the Iași – Ungheni section, which is 25 kilometers long, including the bridge over the Prut River, which will be completely electrified and rehabilitated with financial support from the European Commission through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).

The project, developed and submitted in January 2025 by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR) was selected from among 258 applications submitted by EU member states and partner countries. It is among the 94 projects that will benefit from non-reimbursable European funding, as part of a package totaling over 2.8 billion euros.

“This modernization has multiple benefits. The modernization of the Iași – Ungheni line will bring multiple advantages for citizens and the economy: increasing speed to up to 140 km/h for passenger trains and 80 km/h for freight trains; significantly reducing travel time and operational costs; increasing the reliability of cross-border transport between Moldova and Romania; providing an environmentally friendly alternative to road transport, with reduced carbon emissions,” explains MIDR.

The official signing of the financing agreements is expected in October 2025, and the commencement of works is planned for June 2026, with an estimated completion date of June 2028. This project represents an essential step towards integrating the Republic of Moldova into the European transport network and modernizing the national railway system, in line with sustainable development goals and regional connectivity.
