More and more Moldovans choose electric, hybrid cars: 87,000 vehicles registered in recent years

The number of electric vehicles registered in Moldova over the last five years has increased 16.4 times, while the number of hybrid vehicles has grown 5.9 times. Thus, starting from 2018 till the end of 2025, more than 87,000 electric and hybrid vehicles were registered in the country, which means that more and more Moldovans are opting for energy-efficient and environmentally friendly transport solutions.

The figures were presented by the National Center for Sustainable Energy (CNED), based on data from the Public Services Agency (ASP).

Of the total number of registered vehicles, 11.2 per cent are electric vehicles, namely 9,849 units, of which 7,768 were registered by individuals and 2,081 by legal entities. The segment of hybrid vehicles (including plug-in hybrids) holds a majority share of 88.8 per cent, with 77,985 units, of which 68,032 belong to individuals.

The year 2025 marks a record level, with 30,567 electric and hybrid vehicles registered in a single year. Compared to 2024, the increase recorded in 2025 represented approximately 35 per cent of the total number of electric vehicles and 31 per cent of the total number of hybrid vehicles, for both categories of owners.

In 2025, individuals registered 3,418 electric vehicles and 22,790 hybrid vehicles, significantly exceeding the level of the previous year. At the same time, legal entities registered 647 electric vehicles and 3,712 hybrids.

At the end of 2025, the share of energy-efficient transport stood at 6.92 per cent.

According to the Mobility Strategy of Moldova, by 2030 the share of electric and hybrid cars must reach 15 per cent of the total number of vehicles.
