Two coins dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the proclamation of the Independence of the Republic of Moldova were put into circulation on August 26 by the National Bank of Moldova (NBM), both as legal tender and for numismatic purposes.
One of the coins is made of silver and has a face value of 100 lei. It completes the series Historical events and was issued in a mintage of 1,300 pieces.
The obverse of the coin features the state symbols of the Republic of Moldova – the Flag, the Coat of Arms and the Anthem – as well as the Declaration of Independence. The coin is packed in a transparent capsule and a presentation box and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by NBM Governor Anca Dragu. The graphic design of the reverse was created by Eugeniu Boico.
The silver coin can be purchased directly from the NBM, on the basis of an online application submitted in the "Coin" section, or through licensed banks. The price set by commercial banks may not exceed by more than 3% the price set by the NBM.
The second coin is a commemorative circulation coin with a face value of 10 lei. It has a mintage of 250,000 pieces and is made of steel plated with nickel and brass, having a bimetallic appearance.
The obverse of the coin depicts a crowd of people with raised hands gathered in the Great National Assembly Square in 1991, an image symbolizing citizens’ support for and desire for the state’s independence.
Dragu said that the coins mark the Independence of the Republic of Moldova and convey a message of unity, dignity and the responsibility to preserve and strengthen the principles of the independent state.
The new commemorative 10-lei coin is the fifth issued by the NBM. Previously, the central bank put into circulation commemorative coins in 2018, on the 25th anniversary of the introduction of the Moldovan leu, in 2019, on the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the laws on the state language and the Latin script, in 2020, on the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the State Flag, and in 2021, on the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the NBM.
