Moldovan parliament speaker, new Head of Council of Europe Office in Chisinau discuss democratic reforms, European path of Moldova

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu has met new Head of the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau, Natalia Voutova, at the beginning of her mandate in Moldova.

Igor Grosu wished her success in her new position and emphasized the importance of the long-standing partnership between Moldova and the Council of Europe. The discussions focused on continuing democratic reforms, strengthening the rule of law and protecting fundamental rights, as well as on the support provided by the Council of Europe for the country’s European path.

"The Council of Europe has stood by us in the process of Moldova’s democratic transformation and remains an important partner in the reforms we are undertaking today. We want strong institutions, a justice system that people can trust and a democracy capable of withstanding external pressure and interference. All of them are essential for our path towards the European Union," said Igor Grosu.

The parliament speaker noted that the standards and expertise of the Council of Europe were important in the process of aligning Moldova with European norms, including in such areas as justice, human rights, good governance and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

In the context, the interlocutors discussed the implementation of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Moldova 2025–2028 and the continuation of close cooperation between the parliament and the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau.
