Dynamics of vehicle registration with national and neutral license plates in Transnistrian region
According to data from the State Vehicle Register, during the period 1 January – 30 June 2026, 952 vehicles with neutral model plates were registered at the Public Services Agency subdivisions in the municipality of Tiraspol and the city of Rîbnița. From the launch of the aforementioned registration points, in the period 1 September 2018 – 30 June 2026, a total of 13,408 non-commercial vehicles from the Transnistrian region have been documented with neutral model plates and are currently active.
In the first half of 2026, 2,834 vehicles from the region were registered with national plates, bringing their total number to 22,030 transport units. The data confirm that registration with national plates represents the predominant option for citizens of the Republic of Moldova residing in the Transnistrian region.
At the same time, the upward trend in registrations at the subdivisions of the Public Services Agency reflects the progressive integration of residents from the left bank of the Nistru into the single legal space of the Republic of Moldova and their direct access to the rights, services, and facilities provided by the national legal framework.
The neutral license plate mechanism has a transitional and provisional character in the process of vehicle documentation. This mechanism creates the necessary preconditions for including vehicles in the single national register, monitoring them in national and international road traffic, facilitating the compliance of drivers residing in the territory temporarily not controlled by the constitutional authorities with the requirements of the applicable regulatory framework, as well as encouraging the acquisition of national model plates.
