Moldovans working in Canada or Ukraine to be eligible for pensions
Citizens of the Republic of Moldova who work legally in Canada or Ukraine will be able to receive old-age pensions and other social benefits, such as disability pensions and survivor’s pensions. The Government today approved the ratification of Social Security Agreements with the two countries.
The documents will allow the totalization of employment periods completed in the Republic of Moldova and Canada, or in the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, in situations where a person does not meet the minimum contribution period required to qualify for a pension in a single state.
According to official data, over 20,000 citizens of the Republic of Moldova live in Canada, while Ukraine hosts over 21,000 Moldovans with permanent residence permits and about 2,900 citizens of the Republic of Moldova with temporary residence permits.
The Republic of Moldova has signed 23 social security agreements, 18 of which are already in force. In recent years, the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection has significantly expanded this number by concluding agreements with Italy, Greece, Spain, Latvia, France, Switzerland, Canada and Ukraine.
